Common repairs include:
Ring Resizing
How do you figure out my ring size?
Jewelers can use a number of tools to help you find your ring size, including ring gauges and a mandrel (also known as a ‘ring stick’). ‘
If you have no idea of your ring size, a jeweler can use ring gauges or sample bands to measure the circumference of your finger. Gauges and bands come in varying thicknesses to ensure an appropriate fit regardless of ring style.
Another way to find your ring size is by using a ring that already fits you well. Bring this ring into the store and a jeweler can measure it on a mandrel to determine its exact size.
If you measure your ring size at home, we can double check the measurements in-store to confirm your size.
How are rings resized?
To resize a ring, jewelers will first cut out a small piece of the band. Then, they will either add additional metal to size the band up, or form the band into a smaller circle to size it down.
How long does it take to resize a ring?
This depends on a few factors, including the type of ring and our jewelers' availability. Typically, though, we can resize your ring within two weeks.
How much does it cost to resize a ring?
Again, this depends on a few factors, including the total adjustment needed, the width of the shank, and the metal and quality of your ring. When you come in, we will offer you a quote for the repair up front, and you can decide whether or not to proceed from there.
Chain Repair
When a chain necklace or bracelet breaks, don’t panic. The repair experts at Levy Jewelers handle jewelry chain repairs every single day. The process is simple: we take your broken chain, solder it back together, replace clasps as needed, and return it to you as good as new.
Pearl Restringing
Held together by silk, nylon or thin chains, pearl necklaces are prone to wear, tear and breakage over time. It’s important to maintain your precious pieces with regular restringing.
When is it time for pearl restringing?
Most pearl necklaces have knots between each pearl to keep the gems from rubbing against each other. Over time, these knots stretch and fray, and your pearls will fall into one another. If you notice the knots between your pearls disappearing, it’s time to bring your jewelry in for maintenance.
If your pearl jewelry is unknotted, keep an eye out for other outward signs of deterioration, like broken clasps or dull pearls. If the outside of your necklace is wearing down, the inside probably is, as well.
A good rule of thumb: if you wear your pearls occasionally, get it restrung every 2-3 years. If you wear your pearl jewelry very often, we recommend getting it restrung once a year.
Of course, if your string of pearls breaks at any time, bring it in to us right away. We’ll happily restore it to its original beauty.
Prong Retipping and Stone Resetting
Look closely at your rings, and you’ll see the tiny prongs that hold your diamonds and gemstones in place. Even if you take excellent care of your jewelry, these tiny metal parts will accumulate wear over time. As your prongs degrade, stones can come loose or fall out of your jewelry altogether.
Whether you need to replace a diamond in your ring or a sapphire in your stud earrings, trust Levy Jewelers with your jewelry repair. In addition to prong retipping, we also do stone tightening and stone replacement.
We recommend getting your prongs checked and maintained regularly to prevent unfortunate accidents.
Rhodium Plating
What is rhodium plating?
Rhodium is a metal in the platinum family. It makes a durable coating for frequently worn gold jewelry, such as engagement rings and wedding bands. In addition to improving the durability of your jewelry, rhodium helps gold jewelry maintain its color as coatings wear down over time. Rhodium will also enhance your jewelry’s shine, as it is extremely reflective.
Bring your jewelry to the experienced team at Levy Jewelers for rhodium plating near you.
